a World Beyond Reality

Dutch artist Chris Berens started out on his creative path as a child: “I had an out-of-control imagination ever since I was a kid. It was my warm and cosy place, full of magic and creatures and books. That’s the way it still is. It’s what keeps me sane. And insane. And weird. And in and out of focus. And that’s exactly the way I fancy it.”

Chris loves the possibilities, as well as the restrictions, that a canvas or space inside a frame gives him.
He uses “whatever technique or material suits the job best”, to express his inner world.
“My trade as an artist is painting. I paint because I can, and because I don’t need anyone else for it to work, though if there was a way to plug my brain into a projector of my inner world, I doubt I would ever need to paint again.” He continues, “I would draw though. And sketch and scribble; drawing is my essence and the only way to keep up with what’s going on inside. I always, always have a sketchbook of some sort or size on me. I feel naked without it, I think in images.”

Chris makes elaborately detailed multimedia artworks which evoke an ethereal impression, transporting viewers to a world beyond reality. Inspiration comes from culture, and also, “in our home we have a constant trickling flow of fantastical ideas, creatures and storylines floating around everyday life.”

“I have a sort of layered vision that overlays my inner periphery to the common world, he shares. “The process of selecting themes is an autonomous one over which I have little control. In short, it’s the stuff that sticks after I’ve seen, felt, heard, or otherwise experienced it. I’ll ‘sponge up’ any information or knowledge that triggers or nourishes my soul.”

Chris incorporates a range of materials and mediums in his art to bring his vision to life. “I’m most comfortable using fine brushes and drawing inks and graphite, but I also regularly use watercolour paints, markers and acrylics,” he explains.

“I also like to use clay, woodcarving, 2D and 3D digital imaging, stop motion animation and oils. This blending of artistic techniques creates a surrealistic quality that captures the imagination and entices viewers to delve into a fantasy world that exists in a dimension all of its own.

“Once my work is out in the world, all l can do is make sure I gave it enough love and attention for it to hold its own.”

De Realiteit te Boven

– EEN INTERVIEW MET KUNSTENAAR CHRIS BERENS –

“Ik daag de realiteit voortdurend uit, totdat het resultaat in beide werelden zou kunnen bestaan”

Nederlandse kunstenaar Chris Berens begon al vroeg aan zijn creatieve pad: “Mijn verbeelding kende als kind al geen grenzen. Het was mijn warme en fi jne plek, vol magie, wezens en boeken. En zo is het nog steeds. Het houdt me op het rechte pad, maar ook op het kronkelige. En in en uit focus. En dat is precies wat ik leuk vind.”

Zowel de mogelijkheden als de beperkingen van een canvas of ruimte binnen een lijst vindt Chris interessant. Hij gebruikt “welke techniek of materiaal dan ook het beste past”, om zijn innerlijke wereld te uiten. “Mijn specialiteit als kunstenaar is schilderen. Ik schilder omdat ik het kan en omdat ik er niemand anders voor nodig heb. Maar als er een manier was om mijn gedachten te projecteren, betwijfel ik of ik ooit nog zou hoeven schilderen.” Hij gaat verder, “ik zou wel tekenen; tekenen is de essentie van mijn bestaan en de enige manier om bij te houden wat er zich in mijn hoofd afspeelt. Ik heb altijd een schetsboek bij me. Ik voel me naakt zonder, ik denk in afbeeldingen.”

Chris maakt zeer gedetailleerde multimediale kunstwerken die een bovennatuurlijk indruk geven, ze voeren mensen naar een wereld die de realiteit te boven gaat. Inspiratie komt voort uit cultuur en ook “in ons huis druppelen er contant fantastische ideeën, wezens en verhaallijnen door het alledaagse leven.”

“Ik heb een soort van gelaagde visie waarbij mijn innerlijke wereld de normale overlapt,” deelt hij. “Het selectieproces van thema’s is eentje waar ik weinig controle over heb. Het is wat blijft hangen na het zien, voelen, horen of op een andere manier ervaren. Het zuigt alle informatie of kennis op die mijn ziel triggert of voedt.”

Chris maakt gebruik van vele verschillende materialen om zijn visie tot leven te brengen. “Fijne kwastjes, inkt en grafi et voelen het meest natuurlijk voor me, maar ik gebruik ook vaak aquarel en markers, zelfs klei, houtsnijwerk, 2D en 3D digitale beeldvorming, stop motion en olieverf.” Deze mix van artistieke technieken creëert een surrealiteit die de verbeelding vangt en kijkers verleidt om zich onder te dompelen in een fantasiewereld die bestaat in een geheel eigen dimensie.

“Als mijn werk eenmaal in de wereld is, kan ik alleen maar hopen dat ik het genoeg liefde en aandacht heb gegeven zodat het op zichzelf kan staan.”
